Comparison of abrasion indices between two species of natural turfgrass and two types of synthetic turf.
Surface Abrasion Index¹
¹Abrasion index is determined by pulling foam blocks in a weighted sled across the plots in 4 directions and determining the loss (by weight) of the blocks. Abrasiveness index = [(starting block weight − final block weight)/6] x100. This method conforms to ASTM standard F1015.
²Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue areas were well watered and maintained at 2 inch height of cut with 100% ground cover.
³Abrasion index determined on an area receiving no traffic.
Kentucky bluegrass² 18.9
Tall fescue² 22.7
FieldTurf³ 34.1
Astroturf³ 59.6
