Monitor the Root Development of the Crop

Monitoring the root development of the crop allows better determination of the dimensions of the root crown as well as the appropriate time for sampling. To do this, dig a profile near a plant (typically 10-30 cm from the shoot base, moving progressively closer to the plant, as needed); gently remove soil from the top and sides of roots to expose the roots and reveal ‘intact’ roots. The trench or profile will show the root development in depth, as well as the extension of lateral development.
