Laser Technologist needed--Full Time

Posted: September 6, 2017

Our lab is seeking a research technologist to work in the laser ablation tomography unit.

The root biology lab in the Department of Plant Science is seeking a highly motivated and innovative research technologist to work in the laser ablation tomography unit. The main objective of the lab is centered on building better plants by evaluating physiological and anatomical traits that optimize yield in nutrient and water stress environments. Laser ablation tomography (LAT) is currently being used to quantify some of those root anatomical traits with increased accuracy and runtime efficiency when compared to previously used technologies. The LAT technologist will perform a variety of innovative tasks associated with developing protocols and methodologies that maximize the utility of the lab’s LAT unit, analyze data from field experiments using LAT and other analytical equipment, advise faculty/researchers on any developments in the labs LAT technology, and work directly with post-doctoral scholars on the development of three-dimensional anatomical trait mapping technologies derived from LAT results. The LAT technologist will oversee the daily operation of two separate LAT units by ensuring operation supplies are in stock, performing equipment repairs, certifying users for laser usage, enforcing safety protocols, mentor new and existing LAT users, assist in writing grant proposals related to furthering the lab’s objectives, collaborate with research personnel interested in LAT technology. In addition to LAT related responsibilities, the LAT technologist will work with other research staff to assist with greenhouse and field experiments. The technologist must be able to work independently. The applicant should have a B.S. degree in biological or physical sciences or engineering. Experience with microscopy-based techniques such as confocal microscopy or laser capture microdissection, or with lasers would be useful. Experience in plant or soil science would be an asset.
