Penn State team Places 11th in 2012 PLANET Student Career Days.

Thirty-one members of the Penn State PLANET team traveled to Manhattan, Kansas in mid March to compete in the 2012 PLANET Student Career Days event at Kansas State. Students competed in 28 events and attended a career fair where landscape contracting companies from across the nation competed for interns and career hires. The Penn State team’s 11th place finish out of 62 schools was highlighted by a first place in Landscape Maintenance Operations, a second place in Skid Steer Operation, and a second place in Exterior Landscape Design. As a reward for the fine showing in Landscape Maintenance Operations, Husqvarna gave the program two backpack blowers and two string trimmers. They will both come in handy in the studio at the end of the semester.

Alumni attending the event included coaches Scott Burk ('95) and Ed Anewalt ('98). Kory Beidler ('99) represented The Brickman Group and Chris Weaver ('95) represented Pacific Landscape Management. Jaina Craddock Young ('00) also brought her PLANET team from the University of Maine. Faculty who accompanied the team included Martin McGann, Jim Sellmer, Kathy Kelley, Mike Mohney and Dan Stearns.

A visit to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the Missouri Botanical Garden provided a welcome break during the trip to Manhattan. The 20 hour bus ride home provided an opportunity to catch up on sleep. Next year’s Student Career Days will be hosted by Auburn University.
