On March 8, 2018 at the IIAM (Mozambique Institute of Agriculture Research by its Portuguese acronym) office in Maputo, the national seed release committee, composed of a diverse set of actors involved in agriculture, approved the release of three new phosphorus efficient common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) varieties generated by team member Celestina Jochua. They include a sugar type, a red mottled and a red kidney type bean (provisionally named AP 89, AP 82, and LPA 31), which also have enhanced tolerance to diseases and pests. The team is continuing to increase seed and famers will have access to seed for the December- January planting season.
