Maureen Copeland is a student of Environmental Science at Allegheny University. She decided to participate in this program because she wanted to have a better appreciation of the work farmers do and to understand successfully organic agricultural practices. Her future goal is to be an agricultural researcher specializing in alternative agriculture.

Maureen enjoys helping farmers because farmers have a challenging task; they “are expected to provide food for the population while not adding any excess nutrients to local ecosystems.” She understood that this program would give her the opportunity to understand farming so she would not be “a distant scientist who does not know how the farmers feel and the challenges they face.” During this program she had the opportunity to be part of a farm with organic vegetables and a store (Sonnewald Natural Foods Store). While there, she studied the relation between the soil salinity and symphlan management in greenhouses.
