Cortical cell file number and cell size may be important root traits for water and nutrient acquisition in maize.
Natural variation of CCFN and cell size have been identified in several biparental inbred maize populations and Malawian landraces. Studies have been conducted in the US and Malawi to validate the utility of these traits. These traits have yielded positive results indicating potential importance in improving water acquisition.
