O termo geotropismo caracteriza a tendência da raiz em crescer para baixo em direção ao solo. Diferentes classes de raízes apresentam diferenças em geotropismo. Existe variação genética para essa característica. O geotropismo influencia a competição inter e intra raiz, e a superficialidade de um sistema radicular, aspectos que podem afetar a absorção de água e nutrientes em solos estratificados verticalmente.
